Letter from the Chair
Howdy, and welcome to HAMUN 46. My name is Jared Hrebenar, and I’m a senior at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Government, Economics, International Relations & Global Studies, and Chinese, with a certificate in Core Texts & Ideas. Also at UT Austin, I serve as the Secretary-General of Central Texas Model UN, and am proud to continue the tradition of CTMUN-HAMUN collaboration that makes Model UN in Texas all the more engaging for y’all, the delegates. I’ve been involved in HAMUN since my freshman year of high school, having spent 4 years here as a delegate and now entering my 4th year here as a staffer.
As you prepare for this committee, I’d ask that you keep the following in mind: the work we do here at Model UN is far more than just nebulous debate, and far more than just a line on your college résumés. The steadfast commitment to facts and truth, the dedication to diplomacy, and the emphasis on effective communication that we extol here in Model UN are not merely metrics upon which we assign awards, they’re the honest-to-goodness skills that today’s leaders are using to change the world. In an era as transformative as our own, I hope that you take careful note of these skills so that, when our generation assumes the mantle of global leadership, we can build an even brighter future for all of us.
Your committee for this conference has no pre-set topic or topics for debate. Upon your arrival at HAMUN 46, you and your fellow delegates will suggest and vote upon topics that you’d like to see debated by this Plenary meeting of the General Assembly. Feel free to get creative in your position papers and be prepared to fiercely advocate for your preferred topic at the opening of session; GA Plen is your opportunity to research and prepare positions on a wide swathe of topics that could be discussed over these two days. I can’t wait to see what y’all come up with, and look forward to seeing the best ideas prevail at HAMUN 46.
Until then, stay safe, research hard, and get pumped!
