World Health Organization

Letter from the Chair

Welcome to the 46th annual Houston Area Model United Nations conference! My name is Achal Kulkarni, and I am thrilled to be your chair for the World Health Organization (WHO) this conference.

I am a third-year student at the University of Texas at Dallas majoring in Global Business with a concentration in International Political Economy, and a minor in Economics. At UT Dallas, I serve as the President of the Model United Nations organization, am a member of the Mock Trial team, and am a brother of Alpha Kappa Psi. Outside of academics, I enjoy trying different cuisines, buying candles, and watching "Community" on Netflix.

I have been involved with MUN since my junior year of high school where I first participated in CTMUN and loved it ever since. Since then, MUN has allowed me to go to Portland, Philadelphia, and even NYC. I always get excited to see other university students share the same passion I do every year.

We will be delving into two significant issues this year. (1) Infectious diseases: antibiotics resistance and anti-vaccine movements across the globe and (2) Aiding in disease control during a humanitarian crisis. The year 2020 itself has been a great preparation for the work you all will do in this committee. I ask that you take inspiration from the World Health Organization's work from this past year revolving the Covid-19 pandemic and incorporate that same headstrong-passion into the topics for this committee. It is also important to recognize ongoing diseases that have impacted less fortunate communities, such as the Cholera epidemic in Yemen, Polio outbreaks in Asian and African countries, and XDR Typhoid Fever in Pakistan.

I know that this committee will work extremely hard to develop a well-rounded understanding that the impacts of these topics have on the international community currently. I look forward to seeing what you all accomplish and bring to the table.

See you soon delegates!
