From the Office of the Secretary-General
The 75th United Nations General Assembly began virtually on September 15th in unprecedented fashion due to COVID-19. Yet, even while transitioning sessions and meetings to this new virtual format, the wheels of the actual UN have not stopped working. Over our nearly half-century of history, the goal of Houston Area Model United Nations has always been to provide a realistic simulation of the United Nations and its functions. Therefore, it seems almost poetic that we announce our decision to move the 46th annual HAMUN conference to an online format.
This decision to move online was not made lightly, since we recognize the immense value that an in-person format has always brought. However, given significant capacity reductions at the University of Houston and other larger facilities, such as the George R. Brown Convention Center, there is simply no feasible way to host an in-person conference safely and effectively. Other options, such as an asynchronous 'hybrid' conference (with both virtual and smaller in-person offerings), were considered by members of our Teachers Committee and the Board of Governors, but ultimately still did not seem possible to implement under these circumstances.
In preparing for HAMUN 46, we anticipate no change in the conference date of January 21-22, 2021 or any of the other events leading up to the conference. We plan to make more detailed announcements of the conference schedule and platform in the coming weeks and months.
Thank you for all you do for your students, and we look forward to seeing you online this winter!
